The Smithsonian Conservatin Biology Institute Research Internship Program was established with the understanding that gaining professional
experience is an ongoing process, and is necessary for
advancement in studies and career development. Research
internship positions are designed for undergraduate
or beginning graduate students, but are not limited
to individuals in a degree program. Under the guidance
of a staff mentor, each intern will work independently
in their focus area to complete a research project and
report.

A Rewarding Experience
The National Zoo has developed an exciting Research Internship Program that offers interns unique opportunities found nowhere else in the world.

Interns are exposed to a network of scientists that are considered revolutionaries in their respective fields. As part of the Research Internship Program, interns receive the rare opportunity to tour behind-the scenes at a number of Smithsonian museums and research facilities including a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum Support Center, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the National Zoo, the National Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Interns also have the opportunity to participate in conservation discussion groups, scientist-led seminars, and exclusive lectures given by scientists. Interns learn firsthand about work being done in each of the Zoo's research areas, and make valuable connections to last a lifetime. |
| The Research Internship Program is designed to be fun, fulfilling, and meaningful. In addition to working alongside renowned scientists, interns also get to participate in various other fun activities, such as hikes, picnics, and volleyball games. The activities are a way for interns to meet other interns from around the Smithsonian, interact with scientists and staff in relaxed, informal settings, and make long-lasting friendships. |  |
