Night of the Living Zoo

Prepare to witness death defying acts and amazing oddities at the Zoo's annual adults-only Halloween event, Night of the Living Zoo. With live music from popular band Black Masala and DJ Squirrel, craft beer, food trucks, a costume contest, and performance artists, it's a wicked night of fun.

This event is SOLD OUT.
Tickets will NOT be sold at the gate.

Member tickets go on sale September 18 at 10 a.m. Non-member tickets go on sale on September 25 at 10 a.m.

General Admission


General Admission Tickets include live music, performance artists–including illusionists, stilt walkers, fire twirlers–and access to animal exhibits after hours. All guests receive complimentary soda and water.

VIP Tickets


VIP Tickets Include:

  • Private access to the Mad Scientist Bar and Lounge
  • Two complimentary adult "elixirs"
  • Complimentary food from top restaurants like Joe's Stone Crab and Mon Ami Gabi
  • DJ Bulldog and a private dance floor
  • Exclusive animal demonstrations (don't worry, the mad scientist isn't allowed near them)

Food Trucks

Food is available for purchase from amazing on site food trucks. Not all of the food trucks accept credit cards. ATMs are located at the Visitor Center and inside the Mane Grill. Don't miss these exciting participants:

We encourage you to drink responsibly and take public transportation. The Zoo's Connecticut Avenue entrance is between the Red Line's Cleveland Park and Woodley Park Metro stops. Parking available for a fee.

Members must show their membership card to receive the discounted rate.


To visit the Zoo by Metro, take the Red Line to the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan stop or the Cleveland Park stop. The Zoo entrance lies halfway between these stops, and both are a short walk from the Zoo.

Get creative. FONZ is hosting its first-ever Day of the Dead Display or Spooky Halloween Scene Contest. Besides bragging rights, there will be great prizes including a cocktail party or breakfast for 10 in an animal exhibit with a special behind-the-scenes tour for you and your guests.

You must be at least 21 years old to attend this event. A valid ID is required for admission. Tickets are non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-replaceable. This is an adults-only event. Babies and children will not be admitted. Please drink responsibly. Smoking is not permitted at the Zoo. Night of the Living Zoo will be held rain or shine.

Can I see animals at the event?

There will be after-hours access to the Small Mammal House, Great Ape House, Reptile Discovery Center and Think Tank. Also, the lions and tigers will be out in the Great Cats exhibit.

*Please remember the welfare of the animal is our priority, so animal demonstrations may be canceled if it is in the best interest of the animal.

Will food be available?

Yes, food, beer, and wine, will be available for purchase. There will be a several food trucks as well as food carts. Credit cards are accepted at many, but not all of the food trucks. ATMs are located inside the Zoo at the Visitor Center and Mane Restaurant.

Where is the event located in the Zoo?

Night of the Living Zoo will be located in the middle portion of the Zoo between Small Mammal House to Mane Restaurant. The Small Mammal House is about a 10 minute walk from the top of the Zoo. There will be one registration location by the Small Mammal House.

Where is the costume contest being held?

The costume contest will take place at the Great Meadow at 7:30 p.m. To enter the costume contest, please check in at stage on the Great Meadow at 7:15 p.m.

Costume Prizes:

Individual Category: Best costume of two or under (Top Two)
Group Category: Best costume for a group of three or more (Top One)

Will the carousel be operating?

Yes, the carousel will be running and tickets can be purchased for $2 per ride at the event.

Please see the parking & transportation section for more information.

Can I receive a refund?

No, ticket sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. The event will be held rain or shine.

What methods of payment will be accepted at the event?

Credit cards are accepted at many but not all of the food trucks. An ATM is located inside the Zoo at the Visitor Center. A second ATM is located inside the Mane Grill.
