Applications Now Open for Zoo Aide Volunteers

Looking for a unique way to make a difference this year? The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute may be looking for you!

Applications are now open to join our volunteer program at either the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Rock Creek Park, Washington, D.C., or the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, our private research campus in Front Royal, Virginia.

Don’t wait—the deadline to apply is Dec. 18 or when 75 applications are received.

“Being around the animals—it’s fun and rewarding,” said keeper aide volunteer Cindy. “You never have the same experience twice. The staff is always appreciative and treats us as part of the team. Plus, I always have fun stories to share with family and friends—it’s been better than any paid job I’ve had!”

Current opportunities include:

  • Keeper Aide (various areas): Support daily animal care for a variety of species.
  • Horticulture/Ecology Aide (various areas): Help maintain and enhance beautiful, sustainable landscapes.

Three Cheers for Volunteers ›

Each year, more than 1,400 volunteers donate over 90,000 hours of their time to the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. We appreciate them every single day, but this week, National Volunteer Week, is an especially great time to recognize their dedication.
