Biography

Nicolas Gatti is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC) and at Cornell University's Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. In collaboration with Miguel Gómez and SMBC's Bird Friendly multidisciplinary team, Gatti is dedicated to studying the Bird Friendly international coffee supply chain and understanding how to improve its economic performance. He focuses on investigating the demand for sustainability attributes in coffee consumption, studying coffee price transmission through the supply chain and how to incentivize the adoption of environmentally friendly practices in coffee production by designing and adapting new certification standards.

Gatti’s projects include:

  • Investigating the demand for sustainability attributes in coffee and beef consumption
  • Understanding farmers’ motivation and preferences for the adoption of environmentally friendly standards
  • Improving economic outcomes of the Bird Friendly international supply chain

During his doctoral program, Gatti investigated drivers and constraints associated with agricultural productivity. Specifically, he looked at the role of risk aversion and market access in sub-Saharan Africa maize productivity, and how irrigation infrastructure mitigates the effects of climate shocks on civil conflict in Indonesia. He has a fruitful research agenda looking at experimental evidence of farmers’ risk aversion and aspirations and their relationship with agricultural input demand and farm investments in the context of extreme weather events.

Gatti is originally from Argentina, where he developed his interest in and passion for agricultural economics. He earned both his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in economics from Universidad Argentina de la Empresa and Universidad del CEMA in 2009 and 2012, respectively. In 2020, he graduated with a doctorate in agricultural and applied economics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He started his postdoctoral research fellowship position at SMBC in July 2020.
