At the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute - Center for Conservation and Sustainability (CCS), we are dedicated to advancing the protection of biodiversity by applying science to critical conservation challenges. Our multidisciplinary team of scientists conducts research, long-term monitoring, and training to understand and predict changes in biodiversity, which allows the support of conservation strategies in some of the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems and threatened land and seascapes.

Since 1986, we have collaborated with government agencies, industries, and local communities — both in the U.S. and around the world — to co-create practical solutions that protect biodiversity and promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

Research in Action

From tropical forests to coastal wetlands, and from sea level to high altitudes, CCS applies ecological, biological, and social knowledge to promote effective conservation interventions. These efforts include connecting fragmented landscapes, planning habitat restoration, and monitoring biodiversity by leveraging both traditional and emerging technologies.

Conservation and Science

CCS works in some of the most biologically rich countries in the world — such as Brazil, Gabon, Paraguay, and Peru — focusing on threatened species and ecosystem resilience.

Training & Capacity Development

CCS develops and delivers targeted training for conservation professionals and researchers. These training programs strengthen local and national capacity by promoting evidence-based practices in biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and the sustainable management of natural resources.
