Autumn Fun at the Zoo!

  • Ring-tailed lemurs with a pumpkin

At Friends of the National Zoo there are many things we love about autumn. Beautiful walks through the Smithsonian's National Zoo when the weather is cool and the crowds are thin, pandas playing in the fall leaves, spiced teas and hot chocolate, and the Zoo's October celebrations: Conservation Discovery Day, Boo at the Zoo, and Night of the Living Zoo!

Conservation Discovery Day on Oct. 7 is the one day the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI)—the one-of-a-kind research facility located in scenic Front Royal, Virginia—is open to the public. Designed for sixth-graders to undergrads, this sci-tacular day includes hands-on activities, research demonstrations and mini-chats on hot topics in conservation.

Boo at the Zoo, sponsored by Mars Chocolate North America, is a safe place to trick-or-treat for all ghouls and boys. Join us Oct. 20, 21, and 22, at the Zoo to celebrate a family-friendly Halloween. Kids and adults alike will enjoy receiving chocolates, candy, and snacks from more than 40 treat stations along the Zoo's decorated trails.

For those who prefer an adults-only Halloween, check out Night of the Living Zoo on Oct. 27. With spooktacular animal encounters, after-hours access to animal houses and exhibits, craft beer, popular food trucks, a costume contest, a Halloween DJ dance party, and live band karaoke, missing this party would be a grave mistake. These are sell-out events, and members receive discounted tickets, so hurry and get your Conservation Discovery Day, Boo at the Zoo, and Night of the Living Zoo tickets today!

BONUS! Don't forget that Thursday-Sunday now through Oct. 29 the Zoo is hosting Happy Hours from 3 to 5 p.m. at Panda Overlook (a short walk from the Zoo's Connecticut Ave. entrance). Beer, wine, sangria, and bar bites are just $5!
