Guaya’b Asociación Civil is a coffee production and export organization in the Huehuetenango province of Guatemala at the southern slope of the Cuchumatanes Mountains, the highest in the country. Meaning “Place of the Ancients”, Huehuetenango is home to ruins of the ancient Mayan center of Zaculeu. The Guaya’b association joined the Bird Friendly program in 2002.

When asked about the importance of the Bird Friendly certification, Guaya’b member Jesús Díaz Ramírez said, “We maintain a good shade cover so that birds and other wildlife have habitat, and for the health of our children who are the producers of the future.”

Featured bird on the finca: Pink-headed Warbler

Feathered fact: Endemic to the highlands of Guatemala and Chiapas. Listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
