Government Shutdown FAQ
Why would the Smithsonian's National Zoo close during a government shutdown?
The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, like all Smithsonian museums, receives federal funding. Thus, during a government shutdown, the Zoo — and the rest of the Smithsonian museums — must close to the public.

What happens to the animals during a government shutdown?
All the animals at the Zoo and at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia, will continue to be fed and cared for. A shutdown will not affect our commitment to the safety of our staff and standard of excellence in animal care.
Why are the Animal Cams turned off during a government shutdown?
None of the Zoo's live animal cams will broadcast if the Zoo closes for a government shutdown. The cams require federal resources, primarily staff, to run and broadcast. They are deemed non-essential.
Will I still be able to access my online account during a government shutdown?
Yes, you can access online services, including purchasing or renewing memberships, making donations, and updating your communication preferences. Booking and exchanging tickets, however, will be temporarily unavailable.
How do I get a refund for daily car or bus parking?
Business services will be unavailable during a government shutdown.
For Bus Parking Passes, staff will reach out to customers directly to offer exchanges or issue refunds where applicable.
All paid Parking Passes for affected dates will be refunded daily on a rolling basis for the duration of a shutdown. Member benefits used to acquire parking passes will also be returned on a rolling basis.
We encourage you to show your support for animal conservation by donating the cost of your order using this form, which will be accepted until the date listed on your Parking Pass.
