Engineering Technician

The Engineering Technician operates, maintains, installs and renovates the computerized irrigation systems at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. This includes irrigation system installation and maintenance, locating and troubleshooting existing components, determining if systems are functioning properly and making repairs.

Salary: $68,405 - $88,926 per year

In this position, you will:

  • Coordinate construction and rehabilitation projects to ensure proper installation. 
  • Repair and operate irrigation equipment and systems.  
  • Troubleshoot, adjust, modify, and improve the irrigation system components so that living plant collections and landscape appearances are preserved.  
  • Make routine and emergency field repairs to pipe, fittings, valves, wiring, heads, nozzles, etc.
  • Conduct training for division staff and others in the operation of irrigation components including the Calsense system, satellite controllers, and valves.
