Pangolin Pathogen Detection

  • two pangolins curled up in a ball

The focus of this research is infectious disease and conservation medicine of pangolins — the world’s most trafficked mammals. As the threat of zoonotic disease, including pathogens such as coronavirus (SARS), influenza and others, continues to be linked to live-animal markets, understanding the risks in wildlife trafficking is essential for both human and ecosystem health.

Comparing African and Asian pangolins, this work is based in both Kenya and Myanmar, and will continue to develop capacity with Smithsonian collaborators and stakeholders in these regions.
