Volunteer Citizen Scientist: Tree Mortality Survey
Description
The ForestGEO Forest Ecosystems & Climate lab (CTFS) is seeking volunteers to assist as field assistants for the annual tree mortality survey in Front Royal, Virginia, to understand patterns and mechanisms of tree mortality.
Volunteers must commit to two or three days per week between June 10 and August 30, 2019. Shifts from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. There are no weekend opportunities available.
Application Requirements
Submission of an application is not a guarantee of placement. Applicants will be interviewed by staff, and those who are provisionally accepted will undergo background checks, including fingerprinting, as a requirement for approval as a volunteer.
Training
Once accepted, volunteers must complete online training. Additional training will be provided on the job, including plant identification and factors associated with tree mortality.
Special qualifications
Volunteers must be able to work in the field for prolonged hours in hot and humid conditions. Volunteers must also be physically fit and able to walk, bend, kneel and move comfortably over uneven terrain in the field, and must be detail oriented and organized. No previous experience in ecology, fieldwork or data collection is required. An interest in learning is preferred.
