Biography

Candace Stenzel is a regional conservation specialist for the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center's Shorebird Science and Conservation Collective. As part of these efforts, Stenzel serves as the liaison between the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and various land management agencies and shorebird initiatives to help translate shorebird tracking and survey data into on-the-ground conservation actions. 

Prior to her current role, Stenzel worked for the Wildlife Habitat Council in Silver Spring, Maryland, assisting corporate facilities with developing, managing and enhancing conservation projects on their corporate lands. Additionally, Stenzel has worked as a biological consultant in California, and has held several seasonal research and fieldwork positions for various ornithological NGOs and nonprofits, including the Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis, Point Blue Conservation Science, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.

Stenzel received her Master of Science in biology from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and her Bachelor of Science in wildlife ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. While in graduate school, Stenzel spent time in the Peruvian Amazon studying saki monkey distribution and anti-predator behavior for her thesis research.
